Learning about Buddhism in our backyard

Inspired by the project, Listening to the Buddhists in Our Backyard, facilitated by Andrew Housiaux and Chenxing Han, I proposed and designed this class focusing on learning about the history of transnational Buddhism in Southern California at the University of California, Santa Barbara. This class was funded by the Creative Computing Initiative at UCSB and I taught it to a group of brilliant students in the summer of 2022.

Tracing Buddhists’ Footsteps

In my “Transnational Buddhism through Digital Mapping” course at UCSB, students conducted archival research using the American Religions Collection at the UCSB library and ethnographical research on the transnational histories of local Buddhist communities in Southern California and presented their findings as ArcGIS StoryMaps.

Students’ StoryMaps

American Buddhist Meditation Temple: A transnational story of the American Buddhist Meditation Temple (ABMT), one of the only religious centers in Santa Barbara that keeps the teachings of Theravāda Buddhism alive. By Justin, Jake, Will & Kat.

Zen Buddhism in California: Mapping the spread of Buddhism to the West Coast of the United States, and the Santa Barbara Zen Center's place in this history. By Runhan Zhou and Andrew Gersch.

Bodhi Path Buddhist Centers: A brief introduction to the history and Transnational journey of Bodhi Path Buddhist Centers. By Baige He, Divyanshi Autade, Jonas Lee, and Jorge Tellez.

Sharing with our Global Communities

The students presented their findings as ArcGIS StoryMaps through an online conference with local and global participants.
